Building an Electronics Component Tester

Built an electronics component tester from a kit of parts. The tester quickly identifies and measures the values of electrical components while providing a pin-out diagram.

Upgrading a Gary Fisher Hardtail Mountain Bike

Teardown, cleaning, polishing, and rebuilding a Vintage 1996 Gary Fisher Mt. Tam from the frame up with modern parts for a 1x11 speed drivetrain. The frame is super lightweight, designed and built in the USA from Easton aluminum alloy tubing.

2 Years as Machine Shop Foreman

A summary of some of my favorite projects that I worked on during my 2 years as a machine shop foreman.

Rebuilding and Fixing my PC

Six years after I originally built my first desktop computer from parts that I researched, the key components were starting to show their age. So I replaced the CPU cooler for a newer larger one, and rebuilt the graphics card with new thermal interface material.

Building an RC Car

I sourced the parts and built a small remote control car from the chassis up. In it's finished state it barely resembles the car it's based on. It is a 1:18 scale full aluminum chassis with adjustable linkages, suspension damping, brushless DC motor, and real 4WD with differentials!

Installing a Stealth Hitch on my GTI

I wanted a way to easily carry multiple mountain bikes on my Volkswagen GTI without having to disassemble them. So I installed an EcoHitch Stealth which hides completely behind the rear bumper with a removable low-profile receiver with good ground clearance.

Upgrading my PC

Four years after I originally built my first desktop computer from parts that I researched, I decided it was time to update it. I rebuilt the old components into a new case and wired it with new white fans and sleeved cables to complete the look.

Vacuum Pump Repair and Rebuild

Teardown, repair and rebuild of an industrial rotary vane vacuum pump that had been run out of oil. Researched parts diagrams, theory of operation, and referenced serial numbers for new parts such as seals and bearings.

Building a DIY Oscilloscope

Built a DIY data logging oscilloscope for use in testing and troubleshooting electronics.

3 Years as Electrical Subteam Lead

As my FRC team's electrical subteam lead for the last 3 years, I am responsible for designing and building the robot’s electrical & pneumatics systems, training sub-team members, and debugging electrical and non-electrical problems under pressure as part of the pit crew during competitions.

Quadcopter Build

Researched components and built my own custom quadcopter.

The Denbigh Landfill Project

Worked with the Newport News landfill to design and build a prototype remote monitoring system for the temperature of their compost piles.

Laser Cutter Project

Constructed and wired an 80 watt laser cutter for manufacturing robot parts.

Garage Workbench Build

Designed in CAD and built a custom workbench for our home garage workshop.

CNC Lathe Project

Currently modifing a low cost lathe by adding a larger motor, VFD, and the electronics needed for CNC control.

Building a 3D Printer

Built and tested a Prusa I3 MK2 kit, and built a custom power supply box for the printer and a Raspberry Pi. Installed OctoPrint, a free operating system for the Raspberry Pi, which allows interfacing with the printer over the internet to log data, provide simple temperature control, and remote view the active print using a webcam.

Gas Engine Powered Robot Project

As a fun summer project on the robotics team, I worked on designing and building a remote control system with a gas engine mounted on and controlling a go-kart chassis.

DIY Workbench Power Supply

Designed and built a device that connects to a standard desktop PC power supply to provide multiple voltages used for running electronics.

PWM Tester Project

Designed and built an arduino based device to generate PWM signals for use in testing motorized mechanisms for use in robotics.

DIY Desk Build

Designed and built a custom computer desk out of a butcher block top and black iron pipe.

9th Grade Honors Physics Project

Built a set of devices with simple and cheap circuits to send and receive audio signals over distances via a laser beam.

Building my new PC

Budgeted, researched components, and assembled a desktop computer for everything from gaming to CAD to school work.
